How the Bespoke Furniture Process Works

A bespoke commission follows five stages. Knowing them in advance makes the process calm and predictable.

01 — Discover

You share your floor plan, photographs, inspiration and requirements. We ask about how the space is used, who uses it and what you hope it will feel like. This is also when budget and timing are discussed openly.

02 — Design

We develop the concept: sketches, furniture plans, material directions and, where useful, 3D visualisations. For a room or a whole home, this includes how each piece relates to the others.

03 — Refine

Dimensions, materials and finishes are refined together. You review physical samples — timber, stone, leather, metal — and approve detailed drawings. Nothing is produced until drawings and finishes are signed off.

04 — Craft

Approved designs move into production with specialist manufacturing partners. Complex pieces may involve prototypes or progress reviews.

05 — Deliver

We coordinate packing, international freight and delivery according to project requirements. Installation can be coordinated with qualified local partners where available.

The more decisions made on paper, the fewer surprises on delivery.

What you receive at each stage

  • Discover: a summary of the brief, scope and budget range as we understand it.
  • Design: sketches or layouts, a material direction and, where useful, 3D visualisations.
  • Refine: dimensioned drawings, physical samples and a written specification for approval.
  • Craft: production updates, and prototypes or progress reviews for complex pieces.
  • Deliver: packing and freight coordination, with delivery arranged to your project’s requirements.

How to prepare

You do not need a finished brief to begin. A floor plan, a few photographs, some images you like and an honest sense of budget and timing are enough to start a useful conversation. The clearer these are, the faster the design stage moves.

Making decisions well

The most important moments are the approvals at the end of the Refine stage. Take time with samples: view them in the room, at different times of day, next to the materials they will sit beside. A day spent deciding here saves weeks later. If you are furnishing a whole residence, decisions can be grouped by room so that each review is focused.

Who is involved

A commission typically involves you, our design team and one or more specialist makers. If you already work with an architect or interior designer, we coordinate with them so that furniture and cabinetry drawings align with theirs. Building work — structural, electrical or plumbing — is carried out by appropriately licensed professionals appointed for your project.
